Malaysia Suspends Defense, Law Enforcement Purchasing
The government plans to overhaul its acquisition protocols to strengthen accountability and transparency measures, a state-run news agency reported.
"We take this seriously, and I will await reports on any loopholes or weaknesses in the current procurement system so that we can review and restructure it to ensure full compliance," Anwar said.
The suspension comes after the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission detained a former military commander and his two spouses on Jan. 7 in connection with questionable defense contracts.
Investigators confiscated property valued at 11.4 million Malaysian ringgit ($2.8 million) during coordinated searches tied to the case.
The Defense Ministry had already scheduled a comprehensive anti-graft system transformation for this year aimed at eliminating financial hemorrhaging, procedural violations, and authority misuse.
"We are deeply troubled by these developments, and without decisive, across-the-board action, the people's economy will suffer serious consequences," Anwar said.
He emphasized that authorities will proceed with their criminal inquiries independently, adding that strong enforcement measures are critical for safeguarding fiscal integrity and citizen confidence.
